On Wednesday, January 14th, I had the pleasure of introducing extra virgin olive oil to students from the 44th, 130th, and 152nd Primary Schools of Athens through an interactive olive oil tasting and educational workshop.
Together, we explored how extra virgin olive oil is produced, what determines its quality, and how to store it properly. Through a guided tasting, the students also learned to recognize the sensory differences between high-quality and defective olive oils.
Their curiosity, thoughtful questions, and enthusiasm were truly inspiring, demonstrating that children are remarkably receptive to food education when given the opportunity to engage through their senses.
My sincere thanks to educator Katerina Vlachostergiou for the invitation and for her vision in bringing olive oil education into the classroom. If we aspire to build a stronger olive oil culture and raise more informed consumers, education should begin at an early age - as it already does in countries such as Italy and Spain, where olive oil tasting has long been part of school initiatives.
Every child who discovers the value of quality extra virgin olive oil today becomes a more conscious consumer tomorrow.
